Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov claimed that the Western countries 'throw' principles of the UN Charter 'on the farthest shelf' when it comes to their 'vital interests', speaking at the 79th UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday.

"The old as the world principle of 'divide and rule' is applied everywhere. In fact, this is the basis of all military conflicts of our time. All the UN principles are thrown on the farthest shelf when it comes to the so-called vital interests of the United States and its satellites," Ryzhenkov alleged.

He also expressed his concerns that the conflict in Ukraine could escalate into a larger one.

"We seriously fear that this game could get out of control and lead to the escalation of conflict on a regional and even global scale with catastrophic consequences for all. Europe has enough nuclear weapons, so escalating tensions is a direct path to World War III," the minister added.

The UNGA high-level debate takes place on September 24-30 under the theme "Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations".

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
