During a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin in Tehran on Monday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian criticised the United States for seeking to maintain its hegemony to isolate both Iran and Russia. He emphasised the need for cooperation among countries within BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to counter US influence.

"The US wants to maintain its hegemony in order to isolate countries like Iran and Russia. But we must counter this, including in formats such as the SCO and BRICS," said Pezeshkian.

On his part, Mishustin highlighted that trade between Russia and Iran has increased by 6.5 per cent over the past seven months, underscoring the ‘huge potential’ for expanded cooperation in areas such as energy, transport, industry, and cultural relations.

Mishustin arrived in Tehran on Monday for an official visit, following earlier discussions with Iranian Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref. The meetings reflect both nations' efforts to strengthen ties amid growing tensions with the West.
