Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov announced that a massive retaliatory strike would be practised as part of Deterrence Forces exercises while speaking in Moscow on Tuesday.
"An exercise is being held on the command and control of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, during which the tasks of launching a massive nuclear strike by strategic offensive forces will be practised as a retaliatory measure to an enemy nuclear strike," he said.
According to the Russian Defence Ministry, a Yars intercontinental ballistic missile was launched from the Plesetsk cosmodrome, targeting the Kura training ground in far eastern Kamchatka. Meanwhile, Sineva and Bulava missiles were launched from the Novomoskovsk submarine in the Barents Sea and Knyaz Oleg in the Sea of Okhotsk. Tu-95MC bombers were also deployed, firing air-launched cruise missiles.
In September, Moscow approved changes to the nuclear doctrine, with aggression by a 'non-nuclear state with support of nuclear state' now considered a 'joint attack' on Russia.
