Russia’s State Corporation Rosatom delivered a core catcher to the construction site of the Paks-2 Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) on Thursday.

"The components of the core catcher for Paks NPP Unit 5 were transported from Russia by water, from Volgodonsk to Paks. The transportation lasted for 48 days, in total the vessels covered 3200 km," the company’s statement read.

A core catcher is a part of the NPP passive safety system designed to catch the molten core material of a nuclear reactor in case of a nuclear meltdown and prevent it from escaping the containment building.

The Paks-2 NPP project with two generation 3+ VVER-1200 power units is being implemented on the basis of the Russian-Hungarian intergovernmental agreement of January 14, 2014, and three basic contracts for the construction of the new plant. The main licence for the NPP construction was issued in August 2022. The operating life of the new power units is designed for 60 years.
