Description

An eyewitness to a fire that broke out on Monday in a multi-storey administrative building in Fryazino, Moscow region, described how a man jumped out of the window to escape the flames.

"He stands there, shouting, and jumps through the window. As soon as he was probably this far from the ground, I turned away quickly, but I heard a very strong clap, and there were women screaming very loudly, shouting," Matvei, an eyewitness said.

Eight people were reportedly killed in the large fire, six of whom died in the fire and two others who jumped from windows to escape the flames that engulfed seven of eight storeys. According to the Russian Emergencies Ministry (EMERCOM), there were tanks with a gas-air mixture inside the building.

"The fire is spreading from floors five to eight. The work is complicated by high temperatures and dense smoke," the ministry’s statement read.

The agency added that 130 firefighters, 50 vehicles and two Ka-32 helicopters were involved in extinguishing the fire, which covered around 4,500 square metres.

Preliminary reports suggest that there were nine people in the building during the fire, one of whom was rescued by EMERCOM.
