Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov stated that the landfill gas bursts are to be eliminated by June, during a press-briefing in Russian capital on Wednesday.

According to Vorobyov, beginning March 22, those who suffer from bad smell in the area can be provided with free accommodation in one of six retreat centres until the smell vanishes.

"There are about 6 sanatoriums and camps which can provide comfortable accommodation and education as well," he said.

He went on stating that according to the contract signed with some Dutch company, waves of gas will be eliminated up to June 2018.

Volokolamsk residents have been repeatedly calling for the waste plant's closure due to bad smell in the area that causes allergic reactions and issues with people's lungs and skin.

On March 21, former presidential hopeful Kseniia Sobcak visited the Volokolamsk hospital as hundreds of locals gathered there to protest. At least six children had been hospitalised and more than 56 had sought medical help as the scandal surrounding the Yadrovo landfill continues to unfold.
