Voters were seen entering the polling stations for the first round of French presidential elections, in Paris on Sunday.

The voter turnout by Sunday 12:00 pm local time (10:00 GMT) was 25.48 percent, the lowest since 2002 and down from 28.5 percent in 2017.

According to the polls, the two favourites of the first round are Macron, polling at 26 percent and Le Pen polling at 23 percent. Left-wing candidate Mélenchon is shown to be third with 17 percent.

The two most popular candidates will face each other in the second round of the election on April 24th.

Voting booths will close at 20:00 local time (18:00 GMT), soon after; the first exit polls will be published.
