"It is very important that all Bolivians and all political parties wait calmly for each and every one of the votes, both in the cities and in the rural areas, to be taken into account and that the result of the elections is respected by all," Morales said.
Morales opted not to divulge any plans about potentially returning to Bolivia, saying "in response to so many rumours about what I will do, I want to tell you that the priority is exclusively the recovery of democracy. I want to request that we do not fall into any kind of provocation. The great lesson we must never forget is that violence only generates violence and that with it we all lose."
During the event organised by his party, the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS), Morales also called on "the armed forces and the police to fulfil their important institutional and constitutional role faithfully.
Presidential elections are being held almost a year after a failed vote in 2019 that led to protests and the resignation of Evo Morales, currently in exile in Argentina. The leading candidates are MAS representative and Morales' ally, Luis Arce, and centrist Carlos Mesa. If a clear winner is not determined, the second round is scheduled for 28 November. Results are expected to be released in the next few hours, according to the Bolivian authorities.
