Clashes erupted in the Paris suburb of Montreuil on Friday as some 250 activists attempted to prevent Health Minister Francois Braun from entering a medical centre, amid ongoing protests against the government’s pension reform.

Footage shows crowds of demonstrators waving union flags and banging pots and pans as they called for the resignation of President Emmanuel Macron.

Moments later, police in full riot gear were seen pushing demonstrators away from the building by force and preventing them from entering.

According to local media, police used tear gas to disperse the protest. The Health Minister was forced to use another door to enter the building.

Earlier this month, the government approved the new pension reform, which includes raising the retirement age from 62 to 64, without a vote in the National Assembly, while the Constitutional Court agreed to the changes last week.

The administration has argued that the reforms are needed to maintain an affordable system. Following the president’s speech, workers’ unions vowed to continue the fight against the changes.
