Lengthy traffic jams stretching for many kilometres formed at the Verkhniy Lars - Kazbegi border post on the Russia-Georgia border. Many Russians are reportedly attempting to cross into the neighbouring region to avoid the military draft, following the announcement of partial mobilisation in the country.

Footage taken on Tuesday shows stationary queues of cars and trucks heading from Georgia towards Russia to the Kazbegi checkpoint, as well as people reaching the Verkhniy Lars checkpoint on the Russian side, by foot and on bikes.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of North Ossetia-Alania, from September 25-26, 10,808 Russians entered the territory of Georgia through the Verkhniy Lars checkpoint, while from September 26-27, 9,440 did the same.

Head of North Ossetia, Sergei Menyailo gave instructions for temporary heating and food points at the checkpoint, as well as regular cleaning, bin installation and ambulance patrols.

Meanwhile, the Georgian Interior Ministry stated on Tuesday that between September 17-26, about 78,000 Russians entered the country and more than 63,000 people left.

"In addition, an appropriate unit of the State Security Service is permanently present at the border checkpoint to ensure security and identify risks. Border control procedures are carried out under special supervision in full compliance with the Georgian legislation in force," the agency’s statement said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced partial mobilisation of 300,000 reservists on Wednesday, September 21, saying it was to protect the sovereignty of both Russia as well as four areas holding votes on joining the federation.

Ukraine and its Western allies dismissed those referenda as a 'sham'.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
