Thousands of Brazilians gathered for a party on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday night to watch the fireworks display and celebrate the beginning of 2024.

Footage shows spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks party. Some revellers were seen observing the Afro-Brazilian tradition of dressing in white, believed to bring peace for the New Year, as well as celebrating near the ocean, dancing and bringing flowers.

"I think that the most important thing in this New Year is for people to accept each other more in a period where there are many conflicts due to differences, due to religion, due to prejudices regarding race, gender, I think we can come in with a proposal for people to accept more, respect more," said Pedro Paulo, one of the attendees.

Every year Copacabana beach traditionally holds a New Year's Eve party accompanied by fireworks show, while concerts featuring Brazilian artists follow the display. The beach has several areas with stages for live performances.

"There's no New Year like Copacabana, so it's a very, very good energy and you really feel like it cleans everything and you start the new year renewed," said Ana Luisa Amorim, another party attendee.

According to the World Record Academy, in 2008 Copacabana beach held the 'Biggest New Year Party' with two million people gathering.
