Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, accompanied by government officials, visited the Lok Ma Chau spur line checkpoint on Sunday to evaluate the first quarantine-free day of the Hong Kong-mainland China border and spoke with media at the checkpoint.

Footage features travellers at the checkpoint, passing through gates, lining up, and carrying their luggage with their family members.

The purpose of John Lee's visit was announced as ensuring the operation inside the checkpoint. "I am satisfied with the performance because the overall operation is smooth. We also communicate with other travellers and understand their situation, they are also satisfied with the operation," he said, noting that the government is enthusiastic about returning to a normal situation.

Over 60,000 Hong Kong residents will be able to cross the border into the mainland as border control points gradually reopen, according to Hong Kong's chief executive.

China's capital international airport also welcomed the first group of travellers today, after the country officially reopened the borders and lifted quarantine requirements.
