Hundreds of protesters rallied for the release of political prisoners and those detained in previous demonstrations in Santiago on Friday.

Around 500 people clashed with riot police who used tear gas and water cannon to disperse them. People were also seen climbing the monument in Plaza Baquedano.

Chile has been rocked by anti-government protests since 2019, leading to a referendum this October in which citizens overwhelmingly voted for a new constitution. For weeks, protesters have staged demonstrations every Friday, demanding economic reforms and the resignation of President Sebastian Pinera.
