Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Sao Paolo on Friday to protest against the Brazilian government and President Jair Bolsonaro’s handling of the ongoing wildfires raging across the Amazon rainforest.

"I am speaking here because we are in a very unfortunate moment in this country with a president who has no idea what the importance of the environment is and who is generating at least unprecedented discussion, really does not seem to know The importance of what the Amazon is not only for Brazil but for the whole world, so let's fight," Jurema a protester said.

Some protesters blame Bolsonaro’s environment policies and his support for logging and land clearing in the Amazon for worsening the recent spate of wildfires. The Brazilian President has accused international non-governmental organisations for starting the fires themselves to damage the Brazilian government’s image.

According to data from Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research, 73,000 wildfires have been detected across the Amazon basin this year, an 83 percent increase on last year and the highest number since records began.
