Dozens of visitors come to Winter Waterland to watch Santa and mermaid elves performing underwater at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Spring Hill, Florida, as footage filmed on Friday shows.

Guests of Weeki Wachee can be seen entering the park lit up with dazzling lights, watching and filming Elf's Story, the Christmas show performed by Santa and live mermaids, and taking photos with Christmas characters.

"There's Santa Claus, the Grinch, and, most importantly, the world-famous mermaids perform an underwater holiday show for everyone to enjoy," said John Athanason, Tourism and Marketing Specialist for Florida's Adventure Coast Visitor's Bureau.

Athanason noted that the park's visitors can experience mermaids' performances not only on Christmas but all year round. "Weeki Wachee Springs is a must-see. It's one of those rare opportunities that you can see live mermaids perform. And one of the great things, in addition to that, is the underwater theatre that exists," he added.

Mermaid shows have been performed at the park since 1947. The idea of creating the underwater performance, following the creation of an underwater breathing apparatus, belongs to Newton Perry, an 'avid diver' and Weeki Wachee Springs State Park's founder.

Using Perry's invention, mermaids discretely breathe from a tube that supplies oxygen from an air compressor underwater and continue performing, keeping the underwater show live to this day.
