Two luminescent columns, representing the Twin Towers, lit up the New York City skyline on Wednesday, commemorating the the 18th anniversary of the terror attacks.

The public art installation is titled 'Tribute in Light'. It was first presented to the general public six months after the attacks and has returned every year since to honour and remember the lives lost.

The twin beams, which reach up to four miles (six km) high, are assembled on the roof of the Battery Parking Garage, echoing the orientation and shape of the Twin Towers, and easily visible from the whole city.

A total of 2,606 people lost their lives and more than 6,000 were injured when two hijacked planes flew into the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001.
