Tourists and residents of Beijing flocked to the city's attractions on Monday, during the five-day May Day public holiday. It marks only the second major holiday, after Chinese New Year, following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in December.

Footage shows thousands of people walking at Nanluoguxiang, Shichahai and the Forbidden City as well as signs reading 'reservation is full' and 'tickets are sold out' in front of many tourist attractions.

"It is my first time to visit Beijing and I have planned a lot. It’s a five-day trip. I feel that Beijing is a bit different from what I imagined. There are too many people during the May Day holiday. For example, you can see a sea of people at the Badaling Great Wall, Forbidden City," said Li, a tourist.

Another visitor from Hangzhou, Chen, who planned to spend the five days in Beijing, expressed their joy that life was returning to normal after COVID-19 pandemic.

"Yes [I feel the number is booming], it is back to the normal situation before the COVID-19," she said.

According to the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, Beijing is expected to receive 8.85 million tourists during the holidays.
