US Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed the rising tensions over the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan on Thursday during the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Foreign Ministers' summit in Phnom Penh.

Blinken tried to appease China by stressing that US remained "committed to our One China policy,” and hoped that “Beijing will not manufacture a crisis or seek a pretext to increase its aggressive military activity.“

Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Tuesday evening, ignoring Chinese warnings, being the most senior US official to visit the island in 25 years.

China has drastically increased its military presence near Taiwan in recent days, as Beijing announced air, sea and missile drills off the coast of the island for the rest of the week.

The country officially considers Taiwan its sovereign territory.
