Senate Majority Leader Schumer Chuck condemned what he described as the "nasty, racist, bigoted insurrectionists" of the January 6 Capitol storming, on the one-year anniversary of the event, in Washington DC on Thursday.

"I was within 30 feet of these nasty, racist, bigoted insurrectionists. Had someone had a gun, had two of them blocked off the door, who knows what would have happened. I was told later that one of them reportedly said, 'There's the big Jew. Let's get him.' Bigotry against one is bigotry against all," he said.

Scenes of utter chaos emerged from the US Washington DC Capitol after supporters of US President Donald Trump descended on Congress following a 'Save America' march on January 6 last year. The protest took place on the same day the US Congress was formally certifying the electoral college votes, confirming Joe Biden as the next president of the United States.

Supporters stormed the Capitol, clashing violently with law enforcement before the national guard was mobilised. Five people, including a Capitol police officer, died as a consequence of the storming.
