Dozens took took part in annual Els Enfarinats Festival celebrated in Ibi, Alicante province, on Friday.

Participants wearing military costumes pelted each other with flour bombs and eggs amid a blaze of fireworks, transforming the streets into a battlefield.

"It is a great tradition, there are few of us left to maintain this tradition and we are very proud that this festival can continue,” said one excited participant.

The 200-year old tradition involves dressing up in old military uniforms and staging a mock coup.

The event takes place every year on December 28 and coincides with the Day of the Innocents, Spain's equivalent of April Fool's Day.
