Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras told supporters gathered at his Syriza Party headquarters in Athens on Sunday that he will ask the Greek President for the "immediate announcement of the national elections."

The Opposition New Democracy Party is expected to win around 32 percent of the vote in the European elections, with Syriza far behind on 24 percent.

Tsipras said that the "Greek people can be the ones who will decide if they want us to continue with our plan to support the many, or if they prefer the return to the dark history of austerity and IMF, in the past we all lived. The Greek people were always our support and we again address them. We address them with sincerity again and we ask for their mandate, their clear mandate."
