Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy issued a televised statement from Kiev on Thursday following the Ukrainian passenger jet crash in Iran the day before.

Zelenskiy confirmed there were 11 Ukrainians on board of the jet and expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and friends.

He said that 45 Ukrainian experts had already arrived in Iran to investigate the crash, and also called for the international community to join the inquiry into the disaster.

The Ukrainian leader also requested people to refrain from speculation on the cause of the crash.

“This is not a good topic for hype, [meant for] likes in social media, headlines and conspiracy theories. We will need patience, self-control and wisdom.”

The Ukrainian International Airlines' Boeing 737-800 crashed shortly after take-off near Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport on Wednesday morning, killing all 176 people on board.
