Former Bolivian President Evo Morales received the title of a 'distinguished guest' at a ceremony in Mexico City on Wednesday.

"We welcome you in the Old City Hall Palace, the seat of the government of Mexico City for political asylum in our country after a coup d'etat, when he was forced to resign outside the constitutional order of his country," said mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.

Morales fled to Mexico on Tuesday after unrest over the disputed presidential election forced him to resign on Sunday.

"The right-wing, our opponents, the groups that hold economic power, they do not forgive us. They didn't forgive us. My crime is to be the first indigenous president of Bolivia," said Morales.

He criticised the US for the recognition of Bolivia's new government after the Senate vice-president became interim president.
