The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) of acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez were the big winners as European elections results were declared in Madrid on Sunday.

The ruling Socialists came first with around 33 percent of the vote, followed by the conservative Popular Party (PP) which won just over 20 percent.

Footage shows PSOE faithful celebrating in Madrid after winning 20 seats, six seats more than they did in the 2014 European election.

The PP, who had a disastrous result during the Spanish national elections in April, have 12 seats which is four down from 2014.

The new far-right Vox party enters the EU parliament for the first time with three seats, while the far-left Podemos have gained one seat since the last election with six seats.
