The opening ceremony of the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting began in Phnom Penh on Wednesday as tensions in the region intensified after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's arrival in Taiwan.

Discussions at the meeting attended by the 10 countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) were due to focus on Myanmar's execution of four pro-democracy activists before Pelosi's late-night visit to Taipei changed the agenda.

Cambodia's Deputy Foreign Minister Kuang Phoak reportedly said that the meeting would help to relieve tensions between concerned parties, preventing the situation in Taiwan from escalating further.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken are both flying to Phnom Penh for regional security talks with ASEAN on Thursday and Friday (August 4-5).

ASEAN comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
