From the case of Belarusian athlete Krystsina Tsimanouskaya to the challenges posed by a warming global climate, president of World Athletics Sebastian Coe covered a variety of issues in a press briefing held this Sunday in the main press centre in Tokyo.

"The welfare of the athlete was very clearly a responsibility of the International Olympic committee here, but the broader implications, because she is from the World Athletics family, is something where we have to look at and we will," said Sebastian Coe.

Coe underlined the importance of paying close attention to and acting on climate change as it influences athletes performance.

"You do not have to be a devotee of climate change or a denier to know that the world is getting hotter," Coe stated.

The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games kicked off in Japan on Friday, July 23. The Games were scheduled to happen from July 23 to August 8, 2021, after being postponed last year due to the pandemic. The closing ceremony of the Olympic Games was scheduled for August 8 on this Sunday.
