National Health Commission (NHC) confirmed 59,938 COVID-related hospital deaths Between December 8 and January 12. It was reported by the Head of the NHC’s Bureau of Medical Administration Jiao Yahui during press conference in Beijing on Saturday.

“5,503 fatalities were caused by respiratory failure induced by the infection, and the other 54,435 cases resulted from a combination of COVID and other diseases,” she added.

Yahui also reported the average age patients who died within the mentioned period was 80.3, while ’90.1 percent were aged 65 and older and 56.5 percent were aged 80 and older’. She concluded that ‘over 90 percent of them had suffered from chronic illnesses’.

China eased many of its 'zero-COVID' policies on December 7, 2022, following a series of protests as well as rising economic and social costs. While Beijing has been sharing its infection data with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the UN-led organ has said China is massively underreporting its number of COVID-related deaths.
