Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) skaters Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov finished second in the ice dance competition at the Beijing Winter Games, with French pair Gabriela Papadakis and Guillaume Sizeron clinching gold and US pair Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue taking bronze. The medallists took part in a post-competition press conference in Zhangjiakou on Monday.
Sinitsina said she was able to concentrate on their routine and close everything else out, referring to the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s (CAS) decision to clear Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva to compete at the Winter Games.
“When I entered ice after warming up I was so focused, concentrated, and inspired that no unwanted thoughts hit my mind,” she said.
Her dancing pair Katsalapov said he was "so happy about what had happened and is happening now in my life. I am so grateful to Victoria [Sinitsyna] for being near and for what she did for us. It is all happened thanks to Vika," commented Katsalapov.
Answering a question on how he felt about the CAS’s decision to free Valieva, Katsalapov said he was "very happy! Let's go, Kamila!".
US skater Madison Hubbell commented that she bows down "to young women who are able to compete under stress at such a young age and achieve incredible feats."
Gold medallist Guillaume Sizeron in his part said ice dance “is on the edge of being a sport and being an art and I think it just lays perfectly in between because we would never push ourselves that far if it wasn’t for competition.”
