Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rakhmon discussed the security strengthening on the Tajik-Afghan border in Moscow on Monday.

"You and I recently spoke on the telephone about the regional situation, which remains complicated. I am most interested in learning your opinion as to what should be done in the near future in order to strengthen our security in this direction," the Russian leader addressed Rakhmon.

Putin also noted that Russia remains Tajikistan's main economic partner. This year, trade between the countries increased by 70 per cent, which is 'linked with the current situation'.

Rakhmon, for his part, suggested discussing with the Russian president the program to modernise the country's armed forces.

The meeting was dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Collective Security Treaty and the 20th anniversary of the CSTO. During the upcoming summit, the leaders of Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan will discuss key issues of cooperation within the CSTO and current international and regional problems.
