People queued in pharmacies to buy COVID-19 antigen tests and medicines on Friday in Beijing, as new measures to ease COVID-19 restrictions came into force across the country.

Footage shows apparent panic-buying of the medical supplies, with long queues of people entering pharmacies, as well as empty shelves of medicines for fevers and colds. Thermometers, masks and alcohol gels were also sold out in many pharmacies.

Authorities recommended infected people to carry out self-health monitoring and symptomatic treatment at home, especially for asymptomatic patients.

In Beijing, dining in restaurants still requires a test result that was taken in the last 48 hours.

Sun, a Beijing resident, said many of her friends already tested positive. "I am not that worried (to get COVID) actually but just worried that I will be really uncomfortable when it happens. That’s why I came to the pharmacy to buy some medicines," Sun said.

China recorded more than 16,000 new cases yesterday, down from around 21,000 on Dec 7.
