The district council election results showed concerns over "deficiencies in the government," said Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam, speaking to journalists in Legislative Council on Monday.

The elections saw around 3 million people casting their ballots which resulted in a major blow to pro-Beijing politicians with opposition controlling 17 out of 18 district councils.

The election results expressed concerns over "deficiencies in the government, including unhappiness with the time taken to deal with the current unstable environment and of course to end violence," said Lam.

Lam stressed that her government would "seriously reflect on these views expressed to us and improve governance in the future of our work."

The rallies, which began in March, have since evolved into a wider movement against the government, marked by violent clashes between protesters and police.
