The recently elected leader of the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPO), Norbert Hofer, cast his vote in Pinkafeld on Sunday amid Austria's snap parliamentary elections.

Footage shows Hofer and his wife Verena, heading to the polling station at a school in the eastern Austrian state of Burgenland, where he was greeted by supporters before talking to the media.

"It's a very interesting day for us today, because we have very important elections in Austria" he said.

"I hope that we can reach about a basis to rebuild our Freedom Party again, and we will see this afternoon if [it] was possible or not" he added.

Elections were necessitated in the Alpine country after the OVP (Austrian People's Party) leader's previous coalition government with the Freedom Party of Austria (FPO) collapsed in May following the release of the so-called 'Ibiza' video, which allegedly shows then FPO party leader Heinz-Christian Strache discussing governmental contracts with a supposed Russian investor on the Spanish island.
