Commuters at Guangzhou railway station reacted positively to the relaxation of COVID-19 checks, as seen on Thursday.

"Personal self-esteem and personal space have also been seriously damaged," claimed one passenger Liu. "This opening-up, I think, is a symbol of the prosperity of our motherland, and it is a very correct concept. Now it feels like spring has arrived early, and I am very happy."

Health codes and negative tests no longer needed to be shown to travel and for entrance into most areas. Footage shows commuters waiting for trains and officials removing yellow warning signs from the floor, reading 'please stay one metre away'.

China recorded over 25,000 new infections on Wednesday, down from record highs of 40,000 last week. The easing of restrictions also come following a series of protests across the country.
