"We demand that the US side strictly abides by the One-China Principle and the Three Sino-US Joint Communiques with concrete actions to stop any form of official exchanges between US and Taiwan and refrain from negotiating and signing agreements with Taiwan," Wenbin said.
The US announced on Wednesday, August 17, that it will begin formal trade negotiations with Taiwan, with the first round of talks expected to take place in early Autumn.
Wenbin stated that 'Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory', saying that his country would take 'firm measures to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity.'
The heightened tensions follow US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan on August 2, and a trip by a delegation of US lawmakers shortly after.
