Beijing on Wednesday slammed Nancy Pelosi after the US House Speaker defended her visit to Taiwan accusing Beijing of overreaction calling Chinese President Xi Jinping "a scared bully".

"Pelosi is the 3rd top U.S. political figure. She flew to Taiwan on a U.S. military plane. During the trip to Taiwan, she defended herself as the representative of the United States and claimed this was an official visit. All of them fully demonstrate that cooperating with Taiwan is a major political provocation to escalate US-Taiwan official relations," said China MOFA spokesperson Wang Wenbin in a Beijing press briefing on Wednesday.

Wang Wenbin defended China's military drills in the Strait of Taiwan as "necessary and reasonable" countermeasures and reiterated that as long as the US does it, China will surely strike back.

Wang also mentioned the consensus regarding the Terminal of High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) between China and South Korea. The foreign ministers from the two countries met on Tuesday in Qingdao. The Chinese official said that the two Asian countries agreed to "attach importance to each other's legitimate concerns, continuing to prudently handle and manage this issue, and prevent it from becoming a stumbling block to the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations."
