The Christian Democratic Union’s (CDU) leaders met at the party’s headquarters in Berlin to discuss the consequences of their historic defeat at the recent federal elections and their possible reorganisation.

CDU deputy chairwoman Julia Klockner highlighted that time should not be an issue, “but the thoroughness and content” should be the focus.

Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) called for a party conference this year and stated, “What is absolutely clear is that it’s not about the choice of a word or a position, but that of the entire federal executive committee. One must know that all functions are re-elected. We need a chairman but also a team who is happy to take on this task together.”

Much blame for the CDU's poor election performance has been placed on Armin Laschet for his poor reaction to the crisis in his state of North Rhine-Westphalia and corruption scandals. Polling directly after the 2021 federal elections done by ZDF said 63 percent of Germans believed Laschet should step down from his post as party head, and 62 percent of CDU/CSU membership polled felt the same.
