Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov met on Monday at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, for talks mediated by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

During the meeting, Blinken said that "strong, sustained diplomatic engagement is the best path for everyone".

"There is no military solution to the controversy between Armenia and Azerbaijan. But there is, I think, a path to lasting peace that will resolve the differences through diplomacy," he continued.

The politician also noted that the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia had informed him of their willingness to look to the future.

"We are encouraged by the fact that the fighting has ceased, and there has been no additional military action in the last few days. In my recent talks with Prime Minister (Nikol) Pashinyan and President (Ilham) Aliyev, both leaders told me they were ready for peace," the US Secretary of State claimed.

On Sunday, Pashinyan, in a meeting with US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in Yerevan, expressed hope for US assistance in the conflict with Azerbaijan.

For her part, Pelosi noted that "support for democracy in Armenia, the Armenian Genocide Resolution, Turkey's opposition to the Nagorno-Karabakh issue - in these and all other respects, we are Armenia's friend".

The most recent conflict along the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan broke out on September 13, with both sides accusing each other of starting the escalation.

Armenian Defenсe Ministry spokesperson Aram Torosyan wrote on Facebook claiming that the Azerbaijani military had shelled regions of Gegharkunik, Vayots Dzor, Syunik with artillery and drones.

In turn, the Azerbaijani Defenсe Ministry released a message alleging that Armenian troops had mined areas on the border and shelled Azerbaijani positions in Basarkechar, Istisu, Garakilse, as well as in the districts of Dashkesan, Kelbajar, and Lachin, resulting in loss of life and damage to military infrastructure.

The sides had earlier agreed a ceasefire, blaming each other for violations. Aliyev said at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday that the ceasefire has been observed for around two days.
