Over 6,000 officers were deployed for New Year's Eve on Sunday across France, prompted by 'a context of increased terrorist threat due to the conflict in Israel and Palestine', Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin stated.

Footage shows police around Champs Elysees where 1.5 million people are expected to attend the celebrations in Paris.

"It's the first time I'm coming at this moment of the year, I think is very interesting for us to be protected like that. It's very secure, I can go through the street in total safety. It's great to be able to walk around in these conditions", said a local.

"They reopen in 30 minutes. Why are they closing? They're evacuating the whole of the Champs-Elysées to carry out checks - that's no laughing matter!", complained another local.

Drones will be used for surveillance and French intelligence services will be alerted. Around 90,000 law enforcement officers were deployed all over the country.
