The President of the European Council Donald Tusk said that 'under no conditions' would he accept US President Donald Trump's proposition to re-invite Russia back into the G7, while speaking at the summit in Biarritz on Saturday.

"One year ago in Canada, President Trump suggested re-inviting Russia to G7, stating openly that Crimea's annexation by Russia was partially justified and that we should accept this fact," Tusk said. "Under no condition can we agree on this logic."

Russia was suspended from G8 meetings after its reunification with Crimea in 2014, with the remaining countries continuing to meet as the G7 ever since.

Trump said on Monday: "I think it's much more appropriate to have Russia in. It should be the G8, because a lot of the things we talk about have to do with Russia. So I could certainly see it being the G8 again."

Tusk also discussed ongoing Brexit negotiations, nuclear proliferation and the fires sweeping through the Amazon rainforest.

The G7 summit is taking place in Biarritz on August 24-26 and gathers the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US, alongside EU counterparts.
