China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Zhao Lijian said 'China has made clear to the US many times' that it is firmly opposed to the planned visit to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, while speaking at a daily briefing in Beijing on Thursday.

"If the US insists on going its own way, the Chinese military will never sit idly by and will take serious measures to thwart any attempts by external forces to interfere and separate Taiwan. The Chinese do what they say," he said.

On Wednesday, July 27, Republican Congressman Michael McCaul, of the Foreign Affairs Committee, said that Nancy Pelosi had invited senior lawmakers to join her on a trip to Taiwan, possibly providing the first confirmation that the trip will go ahead.

Pelosi cancelled an earlier visit to Taiwan in April after she tested positive for COVID-19.
