Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov said that Moscow wait for a change in Ukraine’s position or leadership, after incumbent President Volodymyr Zelensky said he wouldn’t negotiate with Vladimir Putin, during a briefing with journalists on Tuesday.

"We will now wait for either the current president to change the position, or for the next president in Ukraine to change his positions in the interests of the Ukrainian people," Peskov stated.

Zelensky first made his own pre-conditions on negotiating an end to the conflict on Friday, as well as pushing for an 'accelerated' application to join NATO military bloc.

On Tuesday, he also signed a Presidential decree, both ruling out talks with Putin and endorsing the NATO bid.

However, Peskov claimed that Russia had backed a diplomatic solution to the conflict from the very beginning.

Moscow launched its military offensive in Ukraine earlier this year, after recognising the independence of the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics.

Kiev condemned the action, while Zelensky ordered martial law and full mobilisation in February.

During early talks, Moscow called on Ukraine to provide guarantees that it would never join NATO.
