German Green Party leader Robert Habeck said that his party's second place finish in the recently concluded elections to the European Parliament, "surpassed all our expectations," during a press conference in Berlin on Monday.

The Alliance 90/The Greens achieved 20.5 percent of the vote making them the second largest party at the European level in Germany, behind only the CDU on 28.9 percent.

"The competition about the best climate and environment policy and social policy, is welcomed. And if Mr. Weber takes on the competition with Sven Giegold, he will have the chance to put some policy points on European level. 'Bring-it-on', I would say," said Habeck.

He added that "If somebody had asked me yesterday what would be the result of your dreams, I would have said a number far lower than the actual result now. I think it surpassed all our expectations. It (the result) humbles us, it's a task, an incredible trust in advance the people have given to us, our party, like never seen before on a federal level."
