China’s Foreign Affairs Ministry (MOFA) spokesperson said that the phone call between President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart, Joe Biden, made clear that any visit to Taiwan by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would come with consequences, during his Friday briefing in Beijing.
"It is also very clear to everyone that this call was held in the context of Pelosi's planned visit to Taiwan," said Zhao Lijian. "The Chinese side…firmly opposes Pelosi's visit…If the US challenges China’s bottom line, it will surely face resolute countermeasures. All the consequences arising therefrom will be entirely borne by the US side."
The call between the presidents took place on Thursday, amid heightening tensions between the countries. The MOFA spokesperson added that his country has always been plain about its stance on both Taiwan and any US interference.
"China's position against US-Taiwan official contact is clear and consistent," said the spokesperson. "We firmly oppose Taiwan independence separatism and interference by external forces, and will never leave any space for Taiwan independence forces of any form," he explained.
Pelosi postponed a previous visit to Taiwan in April, after testing positive for COVID-19.
