Protesters clashed with police in Nantes on Thursday as a rally against the government's pension reforms descended into violence.

Footage shows tear gas filling the streets of the city as protesters faced off with riot police, throwing objects at security forces and burning barricades. Similar events could be seen in other French cities such as Paris and Lyon.

The protest comes on the eve of an expected ruling on President Emmanuel Macron's pension reform by the Constitutional Council. The court has the power to amend or throw out the changes.

Demonstrations against the reform bill have intensified since Macron's government decided to bypass a vote in the National Assembly and force through the plan to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 by 2030, as well as extend the required employment period for a worker to receive a full pension to 43 years.
