Gibraltar residents expressed their concern over the border controls which are expected to be tightened after the UK leaves the EU after the Conservative party swept to a landslide victory in Thursday's UK general elections.

"Just think, the actual get across the border and into the country will be a hard part," said local John Abbot on Friday.

With many Gibraltarians working in the food and hospitality industry, some are afraid that Brexit would reduce tourist numbers. "We need the tourists to come to Gibraltar," Maria Hernandez continued.

"It was bound to happen because people, I think, wanted Brexit and therefore it was inevitable that the Tory Party was going to come up. Above from the fact that I think that the Labour Party was very weak with its leader," said local Douglas River, on the election results.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservatives secured the biggest majority since the 1980s with 364 seats, with one result still to be declared, while the Labour party won 203 seats, down 42 from 2017.

Johnson said in a speech on Friday morning that the results demonstrated that "getting Brexit done is now the irrefutable, irresistible, unarguable decision of the British people."
