French President Emmanuel Macron was welcomed by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on Wednesday, for a two-day official visit ahead of the G20 Osaka summit.

Macron gave a short summary of what the two leaders plan to discuss during his visit, including the "Indo-Pacific axis" that he is advocating for, and the technological, cultural, economic and defence aspects of this.

He added that the challenges are 'strong' for the G20 and G7 summits, which will respectively take place in Japan and in France.

The French president also affirmed his commitment to cooperating with Abe: "During this G20, France will do everything by your side, so that it is a useful G20. We do not have the right to have a useless G20," he said.

The two leaders later attended a welcome ceremony.

This is Macron's first state visit to Japan since he was elected in 2017. He will stay for the duration of the G20 summit, which kicks off in Osaka on Friday.
