An Orange Order parade with members of Portadown's protestant community gathered to protest against the Northern Ireland Protocol on Sunday, during celebrations to mark the centenary of the founding of the state.

Loyalist marching bands paraded through Portadown and into Drumcree, where police stopped them.

Authorities have banned the march from going through Catholic neighbourhoods since riots broke out in 1995.

Tensions are growing across Northern Ireland's protestant communities over the protocol, which came into force on January 1, 2021.

The protocol was framed to decrease the restrictions of goods and trade along the North/South border. However, as part of the deal, a new border will cut through the Irish sea. Some Unionists fear this will isolate them from the United Kingdom and help drive a united Ireland.

"We are being thrusted upon with checks, that is impending on the economic place of Northern Ireland and it's being put to, grassroots Unionists believe that we are being sleep walked into a united Ireland, via the protocol," stated a member of the Orange Order.
