The White House’s National Security spokesperson, John Kirby, defended the House Speaker’s right to visit Taiwan, but refused to actually confirm a trip would go ahead, while speaking in Washington DC on Monday.

Nancy Pelosi’s possible trip to Taipei during her current tour of Asia has been long-reported, despite China’s strong objections and promise of a 'resolute response.'

Kirby also cautioned China against 'military provocations' and 'sabre-rattling', after the country said its army would never 'sit idly by'.

Pelosi cancelled a trip to Taiwan in April, after a positive COVID-19 test.

Taiwan has never officially declared independence from China. Beijing considers the territory its own under the One-China policy, but the US maintains strong ties with the island.
