The secretaries-general of the SPD and the FDP parties, Lars Klingbeil and Volker Wissing, said the first talks on forming a new federal government were 'constructive,' after a meeting in Berlin on Sunday.

"We are aware - this has become clear - that there are major challenges that lie ahead for this country," said SPD politician Klingbeil, naming the topics of climate protection, digitalisation and modernisation of the state.

Wissing said that although the positions of both parties differed on "essential points," the Social Democrats and the Free Democratic Party "have a claim to form a reform government."

A 'traffic light' coalition comprising the Green Party, SPD and FDP could form the new German government as no single party achieved a majority in the Bundestag following September 26 general election.
