German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Brussels ahead of discussions regarding the nomination process of the heads of the EU institutions on Tuesday.

The German Chancellor said that they will “submit a proposal for the election of a presidential candidate in the Commission.”

Macron rejoiced over the increase in voter turnout during the EU elections, and said that they are facing “a new stage of the European adventure,” as there is “no majority with two parties” for the first time in the European Parliament.

He added that one of the main issues to tackle will be the climate crisis, since it is “a really strong message from these elections in France and everywhere in Europe.”

The French President also addressed the victory of Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party at the European elections, and said that extremes are rising "everywhere" due to “fears, lies, the help of foreign powers who want to destroy the European project and our incapacity in bringing an efficient answer to what our fellow citizens are asking.”

The EU leaders will nominate candidates for the various European Union institutions such as the Council and the European Central Bank.
